Bill for a Day to Commemorate the Immigration of North African Jews to Israel in the 19th Century (Aliyah of 5660-1900), 5786-2025

This bill seeks to establish a special day of the year to commemorate the immigration of North African Jews to Israel in the 19th century, a period known as the "Aliyah of 5660" (named after the year 5660 in the Hebrew calendar). The purpose of the law is to highlight the contribution of these immigrants to the building of the Zionist settlement in the Land of Israel, to commemorate their story, and to integrate it into public discourse and the education system. The day designated for this commemoration will be the 1st of Nisan, which is the beginning of the month of redemption. If this day falls on a Sabbath, a day of rest, or a holiday, the commemoration will take place on the preceding day. If this day falls near a Knesset recess, the Speaker of the Knesset may set a different date for the commemoration. In addition, the Ministry of Heritage, which is responsible for the implementation of the law, will hold a special conference at the Knesset on the heritage of North African Jewry and its ties to the Land of Israel. The conference will address their contribution to the building and revival of the country. Furthermore, the Ministry of Heritage, with the consent of the Minister of Education, will conduct value-based educational activities in educational institutions throughout the year, focusing on this heritage.
