Basic Law: The Government (Amendment - Obligation to Appoint an Acting Prime Minister)

The bill stipulates that the Prime Minister shall be required to appoint an acting Prime Minister from among the members of the Knesset from their faction, or from among deputy ministers or ministers. This appointment shall be made within seven days of the government's formation. If an acting Prime Minister is not appointed within seven days, an appointment shall be made within seven days of the law's publication. Currently, the Prime Minister may appoint an acting Prime Minister but is not obligated to do so. The bill is intended to prevent a situation in which the state could fall into a governance crisis if the Prime Minister is unable to fulfill their duties.
